Frequently asked questions.
Permits, materials, warranties, scheduling and pricing — the questions homeowners ask us most, answered honestly. Don’t see yours? Call (310) 228-8284 and just ask.
Getting started & estimates
Are estimates really free?
Yes — every estimate is 100% free and no-obligation. We walk your property, discuss your project and budget, and give you a clear written scope with no pressure to book.
How soon can you come out?
Usually within a few days. Call (310) 228-8284 or use the estimate form and we’ll schedule a visit that works for you — often we can call you back within minutes during business hours.
What areas do you serve?
We’re based in Encino and serve 75+ cities across the San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, South Bay, the Westside, San Gabriel Valley and Ventura County. See our Service Area page for the full list.
Licensing & insurance
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. The J Hammer Inc holds a California CSLB General Building Contractor license (Class B — LIC #1045849) and carries $1,000,000 per-occurrence / $2,000,000 aggregate commercial general liability insurance. Both are viewable on our About page.
Can I verify your license?
Absolutely — search license #1045849 at cslb.ca.gov to confirm it’s active. We encourage you to verify every contractor you consider, including us.
Do you use your own crews or subcontractors?
Our own vetted crews handle the core work, with licensed trade specialists (electrical, plumbing) where a job requires them — all coordinated and accountable under one contractor.
Permits & inspections
Do you handle permits?
Yes. We handle the drawings, plan check and inspections for any work that requires a permit, and the permit cost appears as a clear line item in your scope — never a surprise.
Which projects need a permit?
Structural work, electrical and plumbing changes, additions, most re-roofs, and larger patio covers and walls typically require permits. Cosmetic work usually does not. We’ll tell you exactly what your project needs.
Why does permitting matter?
Permitted work is inspected, documented and adds verifiable value at resale. Unpermitted work is a resale and insurance liability — which is why we always do it on the record.
Pricing & payments
How much will my project cost?
It depends on scope, materials and your property. Our Pricing page lists typical 2026 ranges for every service, and your exact price always comes from a free on-site estimate with a written, itemized scope.
How do payments work?
California law caps the down payment on home-improvement contracts at $1,000 or 10%, whichever is less — and we follow it. After that, payments track completed work milestones spelled out in your contract.
Do you offer financing?
For larger projects we can point you toward reputable third-party home-improvement lenders (subject to approved credit). See our Financing page or just ask at your estimate.
Why do your prices come as ranges?
Because every property is different — demolition, access, soil, slope and material choices all move the number. The ranges reflect what most LA-area projects actually cost; the exact price comes from a site visit.
Materials, warranty & quality
What materials do you use?
Premium, top-of-the-line materials matched to the job and your budget — we’ll walk you through the options with samples in hand, because only quality construction delivers a lasting return.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes — we stand behind our workmanship, and manufactured materials (roofing, windows and more) carry their own manufacturer warranties, which we register and hand over to you. Ask us about specifics for your project.
What if something isn’t right?
We run our own quality checks and finish every project with a walkthrough and punch-list, and we stay available after the job is done. Your satisfaction is the point of the whole thing.
Scheduling & the process
How long will my project take?
It ranges with scope — a repaint runs days, a bathroom 3–5 weeks, a full remodel or addition a few months. You get a realistic schedule with milestones before we start. See our Project Timeline page.
Can I live in my home during the work?
Often yes, depending on scope. We phase the work and protect finished areas; for whole-home or kitchen-heavy remodels many families move out for the messiest weeks. We’ll give you an honest read at the estimate.
How do you keep the site clean?
We run organized, safe work sites with daily cleanup, dust containment on interior work, and a broom-clean site every evening — plus magnetic nail sweeps on roofing jobs.
